Grand Central Invitations

Grand Central is a cool service that I’ve previously included in the Recommended Resources section of my Profitable Pratice e-zine (sign up in the side bar if you are not already a subscriber-it’s free). One of the problems is that Grand Central is still in beta and you have to have an invitation in order to use this free service.

Well, good news - I’ve got 10 5 3 2 1 invitation to give away. (UPDATE: Sorry, guys they are all gone!) And, I’m giving them to the first ten folks that send me an e-mail requesting them. You can send the e-mail to msherman AT lawforprofit DOT com.

And, for those that aren’t familiar with Grand Central, here is a link to their site, and here is a brief exerpt that I ran about it in my weekly e-zine:

“GrandCentral does a lot of things. They describe themselves as the new way to use your phone. And, it’s definitely that. Basically it allows you to have one number that rings all of your phones. Additionally, you can manage your voice mail through it and listen in as caller leave voice mail so you screen your calls, taking the ones you want and allowing the others to leave a message.

GrandCentral is still in beta and you have to have an invitation to join.”

If you want one let me know quickly. I have a feeling they will go fast, and it is strictly first come, first serve.

UPDATE: The 10 invitations were gone in less than 24 hours.  Sorry if you wanted one and missed out.

Stop losing your mind!

As many of you know, I recently switched to the Mac OS from Windows (or as my friend Grant likes to say - Windoze). One of the programs that I can’t live without is Mindjet’s MindManager. I was relieved to find out that they have a Mac version. I’ve already got it installed, and I love it.

If you don’t know, Mindmanager is a mind mapping software. If you are at all inclined towards visual learning as I am, then you need a mind mapping program - and Mindjet’s is the best, in my opinion. I use it for everything from mapping out marketing strategies and establishing my case management systems to organizing my to do lists. I attach a very simple mind map below that I use for personal organization. Each of the blue “map” icons to the right of the text is a link to another mind map with that particular topic in it.

I commend mind mapping to you generally, and Mind manager specifically.

I Drank the Kool-Aid

For a couple of years I have heard the siren songs of the Mac aficionados telling me how much I was missing by stubbornly refusing to leave the comfortable, widely accepted Windows platform.  They promised me that I would not regret making “The Switch.”  Grant Griffiths’ Home Office Lawyer Blog, Ben Stevens’ Mac Lawyer blog, and others were effusive in their praise of Macs.  Surely the Mac OS could not be THAT much better than Windows.

Then my trusty Dell laptop died and it was time to get a new computer.  Did I dare take the plunge?  Well, I am typing this blog post on my new MacBook Pro, and I have to say it is SLICK.  I’ve only had it a week, but so far my only regret was that I didn’t switch earlier (they told me I would say that).  There is still the matter of case management that I haven’t completely resolved - do I go with a Mac program like Daylite or Easytime, or do I continue to use Time Matters running on Parallels?  That is still to be determined.

In any event, I will save the gushing until I have had it long enough to give it an objective review.  But, in the immediate afterglow of “The Switch” I have to admit that it seems they were right.

iPhone Envy

Well, I had decided I would wait until the second generation iPhone was released.  You know, let them work out the kinks, avoid falling for the hype, etc.

And, then I saw this guide.  Wow!  This is me wiping the drool of my laptop.  I really wish I hadn’t seen that.
